Recently, DIT News posted about the implementation of application control. This implementation is taking place across the university’s Personal Computing and Server fleet.
The application control implementation is now underway.
Application control protects against malware and ransomware executing on systems. Carbon Black is the product responsible for application control.
The application control system and supporting processes will:
- Identify and control which trusted applications are in our IT environment
- Prevent malicious or untrusted applications from executing
- Reduce the risks and costs associated with malware
- Protect against exploits of unpatched OS and third-party application vulnerabilities
- Introduce a process for new or unidentified software to be added to the trusted applications list
DIT is implementing application control across the personal computing fleet from Wednesday 21st July. This includes all staff computers, meeting room computers, student lab and teaching room computers, and the VDI environment.
Initially the application control system will only be monitoring applications that are installed or run on the personal computing fleet. A trusted applications list will be created from this information over six weeks.
From the end of August 2021, application control enforcement will be increased to prevent malicious or untrusted applications from executing. More information will be available closer to this time.
If you work with specialised software or install new software regularly, DIT will be in contact as the implementation progresses.

Ransomware and malicious attacks are prevalent in our digital landscape. These attacks are targeting Universities and government agencies at home and overseas.
Malicious code prevention controls work (application control) is underway to address these threats. These controls will be installed on the Charles Sturt University Personal Computing and Server managed fleet. The controls are in line with the Australian Government’s Essential 8 Cyber Security Framework.
Application control protects against malware and ransomware executing on systems. Once implemented, only approved applications can be run and installed. Application control will apply to the personal computing and server fleet.
The application control system, and supporting processes, to be implemented will:
- Identify and control which trusted applications are in our IT environment
- Prevent unauthorised applications from executing – they may be malicious, untrusted, or simply unwanted
- Reduce the risks and costs associated with malware
- Protect against exploits of unpatched OS and third-party application vulnerabilities
- Introduce low friction processes to add approved software to the authorised white list
If you work with specialised software or software that DIT is not aware of, we will contact you as the project progresses. For more updates on application control throughout 2021, subscribe to DIT News.
