Report and reduce spam emails

We are all familiar with spam emails – they are the unwanted emails we receive. For example, an unsolicited email advertising a product or service.

A more sinister form of spam is a fraudulent email that appears to be from a legitimate source – this is known as phishing.

Phishing emails may contain a link to a site that captures your login credentials. Sometimes the email appears to be from your manager, head of school or other senior university staff, with an unusual request.

It is not possible to stop spam emails completely. But there is a way you can help reduce them, for yourself and your colleagues at Charles Sturt.

If you suspect an email is spam use the ‘Report as Spam’ button on the Outlook Home ribbon (university-managed Windows devices). This button sends a copy of the spam email to Sophos – our email protector provider – for analysis. Emails found to be spam are then blocked.

If you have a university-managed Windows device and the ‘Report as Spam’ button is not available, it can installed via the Install Software icon on your desktop – under Available Software select “Sophos Spam Add In”. If you need help contact the IT Service Desk.

Alternatively, you can forward suspicious emails to reportspam@csu.edu.au or report them through the Staff Service Centre.
