At the start of this project, there were 94 Servers running Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 6 (RHEL6).
Version 6 of Red Hat Linux reaches End of Maintenance Support (product retirement) on 30 November 2020.
The goal is to upgrade these servers, associated databases, and applications to run on a more recent version of Red Hat Linux with enhanced security and support options.
The key driver for having sufficient support is to ensure the operations of many key Charles Sturt services aren’t at risk of failure due to obsolete support or lack of remediation options should issues arise.
Benefits
- All active servers running Red Hat Linux will run on supported versions beyond November 2020.
- Any redundant RHEL6 servers will be decommissioned.
- Maintaining the currency of operating systems, databases, and application environments contribute to an enhanced security stance.
Status
- We are approximately 40% through the upgrade process.
- We have either upgraded or confirmed for decommission 45 of the original 94 Red Hat Linux v6 servers.
- The upgrade of many Oracle databases and other supporting software stack components was needed to allow us to upgrade these servers.
- To date, we have upgraded 26 Oracle databases (across Devel, QA, and Prod).
Next Steps
- Start upgrading the Oracle RAC hosting environment to run on Red Hat Enterprise Linux v7 (RHEL7) and Oracle Clusterware v19c.
- Complete the migration of the SAL+ and Session Variation applications to the Tomcat 7 environment (running on RHEL7).
- Complete the Salud Production application/database migration to allow us to retire the Salud RHEL6 servers.
- Upgrade the Production CASIMS database to allow us to retire the RHEL6 Oraprod*** Standalone servers.
