The Charles Sturt University RED Excellence Awards are presented annually. These awards reward and recognise individuals and teams contributing to the University ethos. The Strong University award is presented to teams and individuals demonstrating exemplary leadership. The CRM Project team was celebrated for their hard work with a Strong University RED Award at the end of 2020.

The team used the award to supply S.M.A.R.T Animal Sanctuary and Rehoming Centre with a generous donation. The CRM team’s Senior Business Analyst, John Sherwin, is a faithful supporter of animal welfare and animal rescue. Having volunteered at S.M.A.R.T., John was keen to assist them further.

S.M.A.R.T. shelter commits to finding lifelong homes for rescue animals. Many animals the organisation rescues are from local pounds and are waiting on death row. There is no time limit on how long animals may stay once they enter care. The animals remain until adopted into a loving “home for life”. S.M.A.R.T. is a non-profit organisation that operates thanks to the generous donations made by the community.

Late last year, S.M.A.R.T. had an influx of pregnant cats, resulting in many new kittens – a total of 80 cats at the shelter. John contacted the organisation to ask what they needed most. Kitty litter was the immediate response. Using the prize money, John was able to arrange for a special order of 50 bags of kitty litter. That is half a tonne of goodwill keeping vulnerable animals comfortable and clean until they secure adoption. This donation demonstrates the CRM team’s commitment to building a strong university and community.
