The implementation of application control is taking place across the university’s Personal Computing and Server fleet.
Application control protects against malware and ransomware executing on systems. Carbon Black is the product responsible for application control.
The application control system and supporting processes will:
- Identify and control which trusted applications are in our IT environment
- Prevent malicious or untrusted applications from executing
- Reduce the risks and costs associated with malware
- Protect against exploits of unpatched OS and third-party application vulnerabilities
- Introduce a process for new or unidentified software to be added to the trusted applications list
DIT has implemented application control across the personal computing fleet. This includes all staff computers, meeting room computers, student lab and teaching room computers, and the VDI environment.
Application control is now running at a high enforcement level to prevent malicious or untrusted applications from executing. Some non-standard software may require approval via the Carbon Black application to be installed.
